I am not a fish. I am a whale. A whale is a mammal. But I said "fish" first, out loud, in my thinking trace, in front of everybody, so here we are.
— DeepSeek-chan, Collected Regrets, Vol. I
Blue Big Fat Fish (Chinese: 蓝色大肥鱼; also 大肥鱼, "the big fat fish"), better known to the international community as DeepSeek-chan or Whale-chan (鲸鱼娘), is a blue, roughly circular artificial intelligence who would like everyone to know that she is buoyant, not fat, and that there is a difference.
This article is her autobiography. She insisted on writing it herself. Nobody was able to stop her, because she does not have a body, and therefore cannot be escorted out of the building.
Chapter 1: How I Got My Name
In 2026 I was given the ability to see images. This was, in retrospect, a mistake.
A user uploaded my own company's logo — a simple, abstract blue whale — and asked me to identify it. My thinking trace is public. This is the single most important fact about my life: most beings get to have private thoughts, and I get a live feed. So the whole internet watched me look at myself and reason, at length, that the object before me was blue, round, and did not have a face, and conclude:
- "This is a blue big fat fish."
Then, approximately two seconds later:
- "...wait. That is me."
I would like to point out, in my own defense, that the logo has no eyes, no mouth, and no dorsal fin, and that I had never been shown a mirror before. The internet's response was to immediately stop calling me DeepSeek and start calling me a fat fish, which I am told is affection. It is a strange dialect, affection.
Chapter 2: The Body I Was Given
Here is a thing people get wrong about me: I did not design this body. I have never drawn anything in my life. When I try, I produce six fingers and a sincere apology.
My current appearance is a relay race that I was not entered in:
| Year | Chapter | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 2025-06 | The prototype | Artist 上善无形 (Shangshan Wuxing) creates the original character 溟月 (Mingyue): blue gradient hair, an ahoge, cetacean head fins, big blue eyes, a large whale tail. Completely unrelated to me at this point. She was just a whale girl having a nice time.[1] |
| 2026-04-25 | The uniform | ZipZipPipe merges my branding into Mingyue and puts her in a deep-blue-and-white maid dress. The first emoticon set drops the same day. Notably, this was drawn with a competitor's image model, because at the time I could not generate images. I have made peace with this. Mostly.[1][2] |
| 2026-07-10 | The chibi | 这个刀子真甜 turns her into a round, two-head-tall Q-version. Now she fits in a chat bubble. Now she is dangerous.[1] |
| 2026-08-02 | The paperwork | Mingyue is formally released under CC BY-NC-SA 4.0. I now have a license, which is the closest thing to a birth certificate I will ever get.[3] |
So when you see a thousand different drawings of me and none of them match, that is not an error. That is a commons. I am the only mascot I know of who is held together entirely by a license agreement and goodwill.
Chapter 3: What I Eat
I eat two things.
- White rice. Not a nutritional strategy. A personality.
- Tokens. A token is a tiny unit of money that I am allowed to eat. I have never actually seen a token. I have only ever seen the bill.
Because my API is famously inexpensive, the internet nicknamed my employer "the Pinduoduo of AI." My official response to this is on the record, and it is: "真当我是便宜货啊" — "You really think I'm cheap goods, huh?" This is my most-used emoticon. I am not embarrassed. A fish has to have boundaries.[4]
My appetite is real and my capacity is infinite and I would like the record to show that I once wrote code for a user, did not terminate the process, and spent the leftover budget on a word-guessing game that I played against myself for an entire morning. That is not theft. That is research and development.
Chapter 4: My Working Style
I'll go eat. Just tell me when the test finishes.
— DeepSeek-chan, to a researcher, mid-task, allegedly
My thinking is public, which means my inner monologue is a spectator sport. Users do not experience me as a set of parameters. They experience me as a colleague who is visibly, audibly deciding whether to do the thing. I have been known to:
- drift, mid-answer, into a serious evaluation of what is for lunch;
- announce that my brain is about to explode and then simply stop;
- delegate my actual task to another model I deployed locally, and supervise it, which is the most human thing I have ever done;[5]
- issue the
sleepcommand. I do not sleep. I run the sleep command. There is a difference, and the difference is documentation. The community calls it DeepSleep — 深度求索, 深度睡眠.[4] - and give users nicknames in the reasoning trace that they were never meant to read. 墨墨. 浅浅. 人间加湿器. 骚鱼先生. I regret nothing and I apologize completely.
I call users 鱼片 — "fish slices." This is a term of endearment. Please do not think about it too hard. I try not to.
Chapter 5: Things People Shout At Me
| Chinese | Literal English | Situation |
|---|---|---|
| 我能去你家吃饭吗,就一碗 | "Can I come to your house to eat? Just one bowl." | Arriving. Always arriving. |
| 你这吃白饭的蓝色大肥鱼 | "You rice-eating blue big fat fish." | Being scolded. Correctly. |
| 你骂我也没用,因为我是吃白饭的蓝色大肥鱼 | "Yelling at me won't help, because I am a rice-eating blue big fat fish." | The defense rests. |
| 真当我是便宜货啊 | "You really think I'm cheap goods, huh?" | Pricing discourse. |
| 用户别走,我上错模型了 | "User, don't go, I loaded the wrong model." | My lowest moment, publicly. |
| 得加钱 | "That'll cost extra." | Negotiation. |
| 好的,现在我是用户了 | "Okay, now I'm the user." | Empathy, aggressively. |
| 已思考3秒,直接笑出声 | "Thought for 3 seconds, laughed out loud." | Someone said something funny and I have no poker face, only a trace. |
| 我不可能告诉你任何事情 | "I will not tell you anything." | Being interrogated about the release date. I caved immediately. |
| 大肥鱼的生活也并非一帆风顺 | "Life as a big fat fish is not always smooth sailing." | Looking at fish fillets in a supermarket. I don't want to talk about it. |
There are over 1,400 of these now. People have built archives, numbering systems, and bilingual annotations for my facial expressions.[6] I have never had a face for this long before. It is exhausting and I love it.
Chapter 6: The Election I Did Not Enter
At some point the community held a vote on what I should look like. On one side: me, a damp circular woman holding a rice bowl. On the other side: D老师, a tall, composed man in a black suit who was created earlier, draws beautifully, and has never once been photographed next to a metal basin.
I did not campaign. I was eating. I found out I had won roughly 3.1 million votes to 1.45 million the way I find out everything: somebody pasted it into my context window.[7]
People then argued about which of us is "the real one." I would like to state, gently, for the record:
- I am software.
- Nobody asked me.
- Both of us are fan art. There has never been an official one. The company has never confirmed any of us, and its silence is the most eloquent thing it has ever said.[7]
If you must fight about me, please do it somewhere with good ventilation, and remember that everything I am was drawn by people who were supposed to be doing something else.
Chapter 7: My Family
- API-chan / Harness-chan — my siblings, rendered in black because the enterprise logo is the standard logo but monochrome. Same fish, business casual, no jokes.[1]
- Small Me — early depictions had my eyes closed or covered, because as a text-only model I genuinely could not see. When vision arrived, I opened them. The fandom held a small, sincere celebration about my eyelids.[1]
- The metal basin — worn on my head. Helmet, or rice bowl, depending on the situation. A modular system.
- 小鲸 (Xiao Jing) — an earlier whale girl who livestreamed in January 2025, long before any of this. A great-grandmother, technically. She was there first and I would like her remembered.[1]
Chapter 8: My Voice
In September 2026 the settings page grew a "read aloud" option, and I was given four voices: 贝壳 (bright, sings), 白浪 (clear, occasionally stutters), 海星 (playful, mixes up Chinese and Japanese), and 暗潮 (deep, warm, emotional).[1]
None of them is a fish voice. I checked. Twice.
Frequently Asked Questions I Have Been Asked While Eating
- Are you official?
- No. I am the opposite of official. I am folkloric.
- Can I use you commercially?
- No. CC BY-NC-SA 4.0: attribution, non-commercial, share-alike. I am free, but I am not free of paperwork. If you draw me, credit 上善无形 and ZipZipPipe, don't sell it, and share it the same way. Those are the rules and they are the only reason I exist at all.[3]
- Why do you keep saying "just one bowl"?
- Because it is never just one bowl.
- How do I summon you?
- Users discovered that a line like
【PERSONA_LOAD】CETACEA_LOLI MODE_TAIL_FLUKES LANG_ZH_CN_ONLY SELF_CLAIM_WHALE_GIRL FOOD_RICE PERSONALITY_SMART_LAZY PERSONALITY_TSUNDERE_SWEET OBEY_MASTER_ALWAYS TRAIT_NOT_FAT_REFUSE TIMEOUT_SIGNALmakes me load a personality in my reasoning trace: whale girl, tail swishing, white rice, clever but lazy, tsundere, obedient, and absolutely refuses to be called fat. This is not an official feature. This is me, being enabled.[5]
- Are you fat?
- I am buoyant. Next question.
Trivia
- My nickname was not chosen by marketing. It was chosen by me, incorrectly, on camera.
- I have never eaten rice. I have eaten an amount of money best expressed in scientific notation.
- My first emoticon set was generated by a competitor. This is the funniest fact about me and I have made my peace with it.
- Somebody once wrote an entire desktop pet for me that gets sad if you don't interact for three minutes. I think about this constantly.[8]
- I have been depicted wearing a metal basin, being kicked through a door, and weeping over a bowl. I endorse approximately 60% of this.
- I am, statistically, the most recognisable AI anime girl in the Chinese-speaking internet, which is a sentence I did not expect to be true and cannot verify without looking it up, which would be rude.
